Anita Among Accident: Speaker’s Convoy Escapes Collision in Mukono

Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, narrowly avoided a serious road accident on Saturday evening after a speeding trailer nearly crashed into her convoy along the Kampala–Jinja highway near Mukono.

According to Chris Obore, the Parliament’s Director of Communications, the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. as the Speaker was returning to Kampala from Bugweri District, where she had been campaigning for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in her capacity as the NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female).

Obore said the trailer “suddenly swerved toward the Speaker’s car after some vehicles in the convoy had already passed.” He added that the Speaker’s driver managed to steer to the edge of the road just in time to avoid a devastating impact.

Police Arrest Trailer Driver

Police in Mukono later detained the trailer driver, Ivan Lubega (32), and his co-driver, Amis Waiswa, to assist with ongoing investigations. The truck, reportedly headed toward Jinja, had veered into the opposite lane, nearly colliding head-on with the convoy. Fortunately, no injuries or damage were reported. Eyewitnesses described the incident as “a very close call.”

Traffic authorities have since warned motorists to be extra cautious, especially on the Kampala–Jinja corridor, which remains one of Uganda’s most accident-prone highways.

Rising Road Safety Concerns

Uganda’s roads continue to see alarming accident rates. The 2024 Uganda Police Annual Traffic Report recorded 22,275 road crashes, leading to 4,716 deaths and 18,305 injuries. Authorities attribute over 80% of these incidents to human error, including reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and driver fatigue.

The Anita Among accident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter road safety enforcement and driver awareness, particularly along major highways connecting Uganda’s eastern corridor.
