Farmers in Bukibokolo sub county in Bududa district are counting losses following a heavy downpour which destroyed their crops yesterday night.
The heavy rains that lasted for over five hours destroyed mainly onions, bananas, cassava and beans in the three parishes of Bukari, Bulumino and Bwilimbi in Bukibokolo sub county in Bududa.
Some of the farmers who our reporter talked to said they had suffered huge losses and do not know how they are going to survive during this period of Covid-19 crisis.
“Crops whose value is close to Shs100 million were destroyed by heavy rains that hit our area yesterday night while we were sleeping,” said Emmanuel Wabuteya, a farmer of Shilayi village in Bulumino parish.
Richard Wabukabasi, a farmer from Bukari village in Bukari parish said all his food crops that he planted in three different gardens had been destroyed.
He urged government to intervene since they don’t have any activity to supplement on their income at this time when they are struggling withhe t Covid-19 pandemic.
Julius Wanzala the LC 1 chairperson Bunabukoti- B said the most affected area is Bwilimbi parish where not only crops but houses were also destroyed leaving people stranded with nowhere to go.
He called on the government to declare this a disaster and come in to supply relief food to the affected people.
