The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a formal investigation following controversial incidents during the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals in Morocco.
CAF confirmed the move on Monday after reviewing official match reports and video footage. The body said the behavior seen in two matches fell below acceptable professional standards.
The games under investigation are Cameroon vs Morocco and Algeria vs Nigeria. Both fixtures were marked by high tension, heated exchanges, and post-match confrontations that required intervention.
Incidents Under Review
CAF said the cases have been referred to its Disciplinary Board. The board will assess all evidence and determine individual responsibility. CAF warned that firm sanctions will follow if breaches of conduct are confirmed.
One major incident occurred after Nigeria’s 2–0 win over Algeria. The Super Eagles advanced to the semifinals thanks to goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, keeping their title hopes alive.
However, emotions boiled over after the final whistle. Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane was involved in heated exchanges with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika. Players and officials stepped in to calm the situation. These scenes are now part of CAF’s review.
Morocco vs Cameroon Also Probed
The second match under scrutiny is Morocco’s 2–0 victory over Cameroon. As tournament hosts, Morocco have played under intense pressure throughout the competition.
CAF noted that some post-match actions, especially those directed at match officials, may have crossed disciplinary lines.
Media Conduct Also Investigated
In an unusual move, CAF confirmed it is also reviewing the behavior of some media personnel. Footage from the mixed zone allegedly shows inappropriate conduct by members of the press. This marks a rare extension of disciplinary oversight beyond teams and officials.

As AFCON 2025 continues, CAF warned that discipline off the pitch will be just as important as performance on it. Decisions made in disciplinary rooms could now shape the tournament as much as the matches themselves.
