Cedric Babu: Born in Nairobi, Passed Away in Kenya, to Be Laid to Rest in Uganda on Saturday

Cedric Babu, a renowned sportsman, media personality, and political figure, passed away at the age of 50 on May 31 in Kenya. His sudden heart failure during a tennis tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, shocked the nation. He was airlifted to Nairobi, where he sadly passed away. Born in Nairobi, Cedric Babu’s final journey will bring him back to his ancestral homeland of Uganda for burial on Saturday.

The nation’s grief reflects Cedric Babu’s immense impact on Ugandan sports, media, and politics. He dedicated his life to uplifting his country through multiple fields. From excelling in sports to contributing to the media and political landscapes, Cedric Babu demonstrated what it means to serve one’s nation with dedication and drive.

During a requiem mass at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala, Parliament Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa addressed concerns about Uganda’s healthcare system in light of Cedric’s death. Many wondered if better local medical services could have saved his life. Tayebwa acknowledged these concerns but stressed that Cedric’s death was a reminder of life’s natural course. “Even some respected people said Cedric wouldn’t have died if we had critical healthcare services, but I think this was Cedric’s time,” he said. Tayebwa also reassured the public about government plans to improve healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of a Shs270 billion cardiovascular hospital in Naguru.

Cedric’s mother, Olive Zaitun Kigongo, a prominent businesswoman and President of the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, shared her grief. “I still had hope he’d pull through,” she recalled, describing the desperate journey to Nairobi to be by Cedric’s side. Her deep bond with Cedric was clear as she referred to him as “everything” to her.

Cedric’s father, Captain Francis Babu, a respected pilot, also shared emotional memories of his son. He reminisced about Cedric’s early life and athletic abilities, especially his passion for rugby and tennis. “He was our diamond,” said Captain Babu, speaking proudly of Cedric’s contributions to Ugandan sports. Cedric also expressed a desire to run for a parliamentary seat, reflecting his growing leadership potential.

Cedric’s widow, Allison Gallagher, along with their three sons—Amani, Kilian, and Shema—paid tribute to Cedric. She spoke of Cedric’s core values of hard work, kindness, and dependability. “Being a man is not about being tough but being dependable and with love,” she shared. While the family mourns his loss, they find comfort knowing his teachings live on in them.

Saturday’s funeral in Uganda will offer friends, family, and the nation an opportunity to honor Cedric Babu’s life. Though his passing left a void, his legacy in sports, media, and politics will continue to inspire generations.
