Brazilian Forward to Feature at Club World Cup
The Chelsea Joao Pedro signing is official. Chelsea have finalized a deal worth up to £60 million to bring the Brighton striker to Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old Brazilian has signed a seven-year contract and will soon undergo his medical in the United States. He is expected to join Enzo Maresca’s squad at the Club World Cup.
Pedro will travel from Brazil to the U.S. and can be registered between June 27 and July 3. He is likely to debut in the quarter-final match against Palmeiras on Friday in Philadelphia. Kick-off is scheduled for 2am UK time on Saturday morning.
Chelsea Finalizing Jamie Gittens Transfer
In addition to Pedro, Chelsea are close to signing Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old winger will sign a seven-year deal after completing his medical. The transfer fee is around €65 million (£55.5 million).
However, Gittens will not take part in the Club World Cup. He already featured for Dortmund in the tournament’s group stage, which rules him out of appearing for another club.
Brighton Stay Committed to Their Transfer Philosophy
Despite losing a key player, Brighton remain firm in their approach. Joao Pedro joined from Watford in 2023 for £35 million and went on to contribute 40 goals and assists in 70 appearances. He was the top scorer in the Europa League group stage and scored a crucial late winner against Marseille.
Although Brighton initially did not plan to sell Pedro, Premier League interest grew in recent weeks. Newcastle made a £50 million bid, but Pedro chose Chelsea instead. The Blues admire his versatility and see him as a player who can lead the attack or operate across the front line.
Watford will receive 20% of the profit from Brighton’s sale under a previously agreed clause.
Player Departure Linked to Internal Issues
Pedro’s move also followed recent incidents at Brighton. He was sent off against Brentford and reportedly clashed with Jan Paul van Hecke in training. While not labeled as a disruptive player, those events raised concerns within the club.
Brighton believe in selling players when timing and value align. They will not hold back talent if the terms are right. With Pedro gone, the club will assess options already available, including Georginio Rutter, Evan Ferguson, Danny Welbeck, and new arrival Charalampos Kostoulas.
Pedro’s switch to Chelsea supports his goal of playing top-level football and increases his chances of making Brazil’s World Cup squad.
