Dr. Hamis Kiggundu Boosts Uganda Cranes with Shs20M

Date:

Dr. Hamis Kiggundu boosts Uganda Cranes with a generous Shs20 million contribution ahead of their CHAN 2024 opener against Algeria, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to Ugandan football.

Hamis Kiggundu’s Financial Support for Uganda Cranes

Through Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, top businessman and philanthropist Dr. Hamis Kiggundu handed over Shs20 million to the national team. Significantly, this boost comes right before their crucial CHAN 2024 match against Algeria, scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.

“I met one of the friends of Uganda Cranes, Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, and he gave me a small token to give you. He gave Shs20 million to buy water and promised the same amount for every win,” said Speaker Among.

This offer not only energizes the squad but also demonstrates the critical role corporate philanthropy plays in national sports development.

A History of Investment in Ugandan Football

Nakivubo Stadium Reconstruction

Dr. Kiggundu is no stranger to sports philanthropy. In fact, as CEO of Hamz Group of Companies, his most significant sports-related investment is the reconstruction of Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium — now Uganda’s only internationally accredited stadium located in Kampala. Moreover, this project revitalizes the city’s sports infrastructure and boosts international hosting capabilities.

Hamz Cup and Grassroots Development

Currently underway is the Hamz Cup, a football tournament organized by Kiggundu that targets grassroots talent across the country. At present, the tournament has reached the Round of 32, with teams like Mutaasa Kaferro and Original Kisekka Spare Center gearing up for their August 6th clash.

The Hamz Cup features a prize pool worth over Shs100 million, with rewards broken down as follows:

  • Winner: Shs50 million
  • 1st Runner-Up: Shs25 million
  • 2nd Runner-Up: Shs15 million
  • 3rd Runner-Up: Shs10 million
  • Individual Awards: Worth millions

This initiative demonstrates Dr. Hamis Kiggundu’s long-term vision to nurture local talent, elevate the sport’s profile, and create real opportunities for young athletes.

Beyond Football: Sponsoring Individual Athletes

Beyond team sports, Dr. Hamis Kiggundu also sponsors Ugandan athletes competing in international competitions, showcasing his holistic approach to sports development. His actions encourage other business leaders to support Uganda’s sporting ecosystem.

Why Philanthropy Like This Matters

Morale Boost for National Teams

Financial incentives such as Kiggundu’s pledge for every CHAN 2024 victory not only provide tangible support but also lift player morale and commitment. Uganda Cranes players are motivated by knowing that their performance will be rewarded and recognized.

Building a Sustainable Sports Culture

With major investments like the Nakivubo Stadium and tournaments like the Hamz Cup, Kiggundu is doing more than just writing checks—he’s building a sustainable sports culture in Uganda. His model is one that blends business success with national pride and social impact.
