Ethiopia has announced that the construction of its massive Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has reached 90% completion.
The announcement was made by the national coordination office for the dam’s construction during an event marking the 12th anniversary of its foundation stone being laid.
This comes as Egypt issued a warning against Ethiopia over the project, which Cairo sees as a threat to its water supply. Sudanese Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim has said that the dam’s power output will be sufficient not only for neighboring countries but for the entire region’s development.
Sudanese and Ethiopian officials have emphasized the need for cooperation and understanding between the three countries involved in negotiations over the dam: Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt.
The latter two countries fear that the dam’s construction will negatively impact their access to Nile River waters. Ethiopia, however, argues that the dam will not have a significant impact on downstream water flow.
