FDC Endorses Nandala Mafabi for 2026 Presidency
FDC endorses Nandala Mafabi as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections. This marks a key shift in leadership and electoral direction for Uganda’s top opposition party.
The party announced the decision during a high-stakes National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at its Najjanankumbi headquarters. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, a long-serving MP for Budadiri West and former Leader of the Opposition, steps in to revive FDC’s influence.
The NEC unanimously backed Mafabi, praising his loyalty, political experience, and commitment to FDC’s founding ideals. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the 2021 presidential flagbearer, stepped aside voluntarily to allow fresh leadership.
FDC insiders view the move as a strategic realignment to rebuild grassroots support and project unity. One senior member stated, “This is a turning point. Hon. Mafabi shows the discipline, courage, and vision we need.”
Mafabi aims to restore public trust and energize the party’s national base through strong ideological leadership. He plans to champion democracy, fight corruption, and improve access to social services. His regional ties and parliamentary background strengthen FDC’s institutional base.
Mafabi’s Entry Reshapes the Opposition Field
Mafabi now joins a crowded opposition field that includes Robert Kyagulanyi (NUP), Mugisha Muntu (ANT), Mathias Mpuuga (Democratic Front), Norbert Mao (DP), and Joseph Kabuleta (NEED). Other fringe candidates like John Katumba and Ivan Kisakye have also declared their intentions to contest.
All aim to unseat President Yoweri Museveni, who has held power for four decades. Observers expect Mafabi’s entry to reshape the opposition unity discourse and force new strategic partnerships.
