Former Archbishop of Mbarara, Paul Kaamuza Bakyenga, Passes Away at 79

Mbarara, Uganda – The Catholic community mourns the loss of the esteemed Mbarara Archbishop emeritus, Paul Kaamuza Bakyenga, who peacefully passed away at the age of 79. The sad news was confirmed by Rev Fr Charles Mutabaruka, the communications director of the Mbarara Archdiocese. Bakyenga, who served as the Archbishop of Mbarara from January 2, 1999, until April 25, 2020, breathed his last on Tuesday morning at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala, where he had gone for routine medical checkups.

Archbishop Bakyenga was a prominent figure in the religious landscape of Uganda, known for his unwavering faith, humility, and dedication to serving the Catholic Church and its followers. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of the faithful across the country, who will forever cherish his remarkable contributions to the spiritual growth and welfare of the community.

Born on June 30, 1944, in the village of Kakuto in the present-day Archdiocese of Mbarara, Paul Kaamuza Bakyenga discovered his calling to the priesthood at a young age. He pursued his studies at St. Mary’s Minor Seminary in Katigondo and later continued his theological education at Katigondo National Major Seminary. Recognizing his exceptional devotion and leadership qualities, he was ordained a priest on June 18, 1972.

Throughout his priestly ministry, Archbishop Bakyenga dedicated himself to spreading the message of love, compassion, and social justice. His commitment to uplifting marginalized and disadvantaged communities earned him immense respect and admiration. After serving in various pastoral assignments, he was appointed the Bishop of Mbarara on January 2, 1999, and subsequently elevated to the rank of Archbishop.

During his tenure, Archbishop Bakyenga worked tirelessly to foster unity and harmony within the Archdiocese, guiding the faithful through times of joy and adversity. His leadership was marked by a genuine concern for the spiritual and material well-being of his congregation, initiating numerous development projects and educational initiatives that continue to benefit the people of Mbarara.
