“Former PM Boris Johnson Steps Down as MP, Future Uncertain”

Date:

In a surprise late-night announcement, Boris Johnson revealed his resignation as a Member of Parliament (MP), leaving many to ponder what lies ahead for the former Prime Minister. Johnson’s decision to step down immediately was seen by BBC political editor Chris Mason as a strategic move to control the narrative surrounding his departure and generate headlines.

Johnson’s chief advisor during his time as foreign secretary, Will Walden, believes that the Prime Minister’s main motivation is his desire to win or, at the very least, avoid defeat. Walden notes that Johnson has not lost an election in 26 years, and the recent committee report threatens to alter that record. Johnson had previously stated that he would not respect the committee’s findings if they found him guilty, indicating his attempt to protect his version of events.

Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Angela Rayner, accuses Johnson of being a coward who shirks responsibility for his actions. She criticizes his conduct during the pandemic, emphasizing that when the public needed him the most, he appeared to prioritize partying over his duties. Rayner asserts that if Johnson truly believed in public duty, he would have resigned without subjecting the country to further turmoil.

Mason’s analysis on the Today programme reveals that while Johnson’s political career may be over for now, his influence remains significant. Mason explains that opinions within the Conservative Party regarding Johnson’s future are divided, with no clear consensus among high-profile Tories. Speculation arises concerning the Liberal Democrats and Labour potentially forming a coalition if no party secures a majority in the next general election.

Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, confirms that his party intends to field candidates in the constituencies formerly represented by Boris Johnson and Nadine Dorries, who also resigned as an MP. However, there are no ongoing discussions or agreements between the Liberal Democrats and Labour regarding joint campaigning efforts.

Sir Chris Bryant, Labour chairman of the Privileges Committee, criticizes Johnson for resigning before the publication of the report investigating his alleged misleading statements to the Commons regarding Downing Street lockdown parties. Bryant asserts that Johnson failed to abide by the rules and should have waited for the report’s conclusions. By resigning immediately, Johnson avoids potential consequences such as suspension from the Commons or a by-election in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency.

As Boris Johnson leaves his position as an MP, the political landscape remains uncertain. Although his parliamentary career may have come to an end, the influence he wields and the implications of his departure continue to reverberate throughout the political sphere.
