High court blocks Uganda Land Commission boss eviction from office

Date:

The High Court in Kampala has issued an interim order barring the removal of the embattled Uganda Land Commission Chairperson Beatrice Byenkya Nyakaisiki from office.

Land Division assistant registrar, Simon Kintu Zirintusa issued the interim order to Byenkya to, “preserve the status quo of the applicant as Chairperson of the Uganda Land Commission pending the disposal of the main application.”

The interim order comes in the wake of a letter from the Inspectorate General of Government Betty Kamya to the Minister of Lands Judith Nabakabo directing her that, Nyakaisiki steps aside as her office investigates allegations for misuse of her position as the ULC Chairperson.

Nyakaisiki was replaced by Prof Nyeko Penmogi as acting Chairperson until the case was concluded.

In October last year, Minister for Land, Judith Nabakooba, suspended ULC top officials over corruption, administrative standoff, and bickering over deals.

This was after the Ministers failed to reconcile Chairperson and her commissioners, prompting her to invoke Section 55 of the Land Act which gives her mandate to give policy direction to ULC on any matter.

In her October 12 letter to President Museveni titled: “Recent events at Uganda Land Commission”, Nabakooba explained the short-term measures she has taken to restore order at ULC and delves into the genesis of the standoff.
