Kenya’s active role in UN peacekeeping and regional stability was a key topic during President William Ruto’s meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the African Heads of State Energy Summit in Tanzania.
Security Concerns in Eastern DRC
Amina Mohammed raised concerns about the worsening security situation in Eastern DRC. She urged Kenya to support efforts to protect UN staff working under MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping mission in the region. Additionally, she reaffirmed the UN’s backing for the East African Community (EAC) peace initiatives. This includes an upcoming regional Heads of State meeting aimed at resolving the escalating crisis in the DRC.
Kenya’s Commitment to Global Peacekeeping
President Ruto emphasized Kenya’s longstanding dedication to global peace efforts. He highlighted Nairobi’s unique position as the only UN headquarters in the Global South, hosting UNEP and UN-Habitat. Furthermore, he underlined Kenya’s active involvement in peacekeeping missions worldwide, demonstrating the nation’s strong partnership with the UN.
Collaboration Between Kenya and Uganda in Regional Peace
Kenya and Uganda play a central role in African peace initiatives, particularly in conflict zones such as the DRC, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.
- Kenya focuses on diplomatic and stabilization missions, offering significant support to EAC-led peace talks.
- Uganda, through the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has contributed to military operations aimed at stabilizing Eastern DRC.
Both nations also support mediation and regional peace initiatives under the frameworks of the EAC and African Union (AU).
