The National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Vice Chairperson, Alhaji Moses Kigongo, has urged NRM independents in Jinja City to step down and rally behind the official party flagbearers ahead of the 2026 general elections. Speaking to NRM village chairpersons at Buwekula Village, Kigongo emphasized the importance of unity to secure overwhelming victory for the ruling party in the Busoga subregion.
Promoting Party Unity Ahead of Elections
Kigongo acknowledged the challenges that arose during the NRM primaries but called for reconciliation and forgiveness among party members. He urged independents not to undermine the movement’s strength by running against its officially endorsed candidates.
“I know there were some irregularities in the primaries,” Kigongo admitted, “but we must focus on the future. When you stand as independents, you weaken the party. Let us learn to forgive and move forward as one family.”
Message from President Museveni
Delivering a special message from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Kigongo said the President wants all NRM members to fully support party flagbearers at every level. “The President sent me to tell you that he wants only party flagbearers to win this time round,” he said. “Let us campaign for the NRM presidential candidate to secure a landslide victory in Busoga.”
Encouraging Internal Resolution and Discipline
Kigongo commended Aminah Mirembe, the NRM Jinja Northern Division Publicity Secretary, for withdrawing her candidacy in favor of the official flagbearer for Mafubira Northern Division Councillor. He urged other independents to emulate her example and resolve disputes internally rather than running as rivals.
“We are all members of the same NRM family. Let’s resolve our differences internally and move forward together,” he emphasized.
Kirunda Calls for Stronger Support
Special Presidential Assistant Haji Faruk Kirunda also called on residents to back President Museveni and other NRM flagbearers, warning that voting for opposition candidates weakens local representation. He explained that in the previous elections, Jinja sent three opposition MPs to Parliament, limiting its influence at the national level.
Kirunda also assured residents that government projects like the Ambercourt and Mbulambuti roads would be completed soon, despite delays caused by compensation disputes.
