The Joan Kagezi murder charges have resurfaced strongly after years of speculation. Authorities have officially charged Minana and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nixon Agasiirwe Karuhanga with the murder of Senior State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi. She was tragically shot dead on March 30, 2015, an event that shook the nation.
When calm returned to court, the prosecution read the Joan Kagezi murder charges. Minana, Agasiirwe, and others still at large are accused of causing her death with malice aforethought. Because it’s a capital offence, the magistrate explained that Minana could not take a plea at this stage. The case will proceed to the High Court for a full trial.
Principal State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka told the court that investigations are still ongoing. He requested extra time to finalize the case for committal to the High Court. Minana’s name had initially appeared in the investigation back in 2017 but then faded from the public eye.
The breakthrough came from fresh testimony by Daniel Kisekka, a convicted conspirator now serving a 35-year prison sentence. Kisekka revealed that Agasiirwe financed the assassination and used state resources to coordinate it. His confession directly links both Agasiirwe and Minana to the planning and execution of Kagezi’s murder.
As a result, Minana has joined Agasiirwe at Luzira Upper Prison while awaiting trial. Both suspects will return to court on July 8 for the next mention of the case.
The revival of the Joan Kagezi murder charges represents a critical moment in the long fight for justice. Joan Kagezi was a fearless prosecutor, renowned for handling terrorism and high-profile criminal cases. Her death left a significant gap in Uganda’s fight against crime.
Nearly a decade later, with these renewed charges and critical new evidence, the path to justice for Joan Kagezi now seems more possible. Many hope the court proceedings will finally bring closure to her family and the country.
