Mufti of Uganda Commends Muslims’ Educational Advancements at Dr. Kateregga’s Thanksgiving

Date:

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has praised the remarkable progress made by Muslim families in promoting education within their communities. He commended these efforts during a thanksgiving ceremony honoring Dr. Ahmed Katalemwa Kateregga, held at his family residence along the Kampala-Entebbe Highway.

Breaking Historical Stereotypes

Sheikh Mubaje highlighted the strides taken by the Muslim community to overcome historical stereotypes of illiteracy, pointing out the increasing number of Muslims achieving advanced academic qualifications, including doctorates.

“I challenge anyone who thinks there are no qualified Muslims for leadership positions in this country. We have them, and we can identify them,” Mubaje stated, emphasizing the shift in societal perceptions about Muslims’ contributions to education and leadership.

Celebrating Academic Excellence

The event celebrated Dr. Kateregga’s academic achievements, particularly his PhD in Education Management from Makerere University. Dr. Kateregga is the son of the late Haj Muhmood Kateregga Namuguzi, a respected former member of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), and Hajjat Farida Kateregga, both of whom were praised for their steadfast support of education and the advancement of Muslim interests in Uganda.

Prominent figures attending the ceremony included family members, UMSC officials, and educators. Speakers lauded Dr. Kateregga’s dedication to his studies and his role as a source of inspiration for others.

The Importance of Education

Sheikh Mubaje emphasized the crucial role formal education plays in equipping Muslims for leadership positions. He urged community members to strive for at least A-Level qualifications, Bachelor’s degrees, or Master’s degrees, whether in Islamic theological studies or secular fields.

“The goal is to ensure that Muslims in leadership are well-prepared to serve their communities effectively,” Mubaje said. He encouraged blending Islamic principles with practical life skills to create holistic and impactful leadership.

Dr. Kateregga shared his inspiring academic journey, recounting how he progressed from primary school to achieving his doctoral degree. Other dignitaries, including Hajjat Zulaika Kibirige, Headteacher of Kawempe Muslim Secondary School; Sheikh Ismail Lukebelwa from UMSC; and Dr. Kateregga’s academic supervisor, Prof. Dr. Jude Ssempebwa, also spoke at the event. They praised Dr. Kateregga for his perseverance and dedication to education, which has made him a role model within the Muslim community.

The Mufti concluded by urging the Muslim community to continue prioritizing education, recognizing it as a fundamental pillar for progress and effective leadership.
