Anglican leaders in Mukono District are embarking on a fundraising drive seeking approximately Shs10 billion to transform St. Phillips and Andrew’s Cathedral into an expansive 2500-seater church. Bishop Enos Kagodo Kitto spearheaded a fundraising event for the ambitious project on Thursday, highlighting the objective of completing the church makeover within a four-year timeframe.
The proposed renovation aims to enhance the capacity of the current church building, addressing the limitations of the existing structure, which accommodates only 800 people, leaving others to sit outside during services. Bishop Kagodo emphasized the need for a more spacious structure to accommodate the growing congregation.
Encouraging active participation from the believers, Bishop Kagodo called it a collective responsibility, urging each Christian in the church to contribute a minimum of Shs20,000 towards the construction efforts.
To supplement the funds, the church plans to mobilize at least Shs500 million from baptized children in Anglican churches across the Greater Mukono Sub-region, covering districts such as Kayunga, Mukono, Buikwe, and Buvuma.
Expressing their fatigue with renovating the century-old building, Bishop Kagodo emphasized the significance of the new structure, envisioning a blend of ancient cathedral aesthetics and modern design elements. Preach Arinaitwe, a member of the architectural team, elaborated on the fusion of two concepts to achieve a unique outlook, combining historical cathedral features with a modern touch.
Arinaitwe emphasized the future-oriented design, ensuring the cathedral’s capacity to accommodate the current and future population for the next century. He further highlighted the intention to create a smart cathedral, catering not only to the congregation but also targeting tourism with its innovative design. The completion of this project holds the promise of a transformative addition to the religious landscape in Mukono District.
