Security Agencies Credited for Calm Election Period
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and other security agencies for preventing unrest during the recent general elections. He said intelligence-led operations stopped groups that planned to disrupt the vote.
Museveni spoke while officiating at the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations in Kabale District. He told the gathering that security teams acted early and decisively. Their actions, he noted, protected peace and national stability during the election period.
The president said Uganda now has a strong and responsive security system. He added that the country can deal firmly with any future threats.
Tarehe Sita Celebrations Highlight Unity and Stability
The national event took place under the theme of defending revolutionary gains and promoting unity and transformation. Leaders, soldiers, and civilians from across the country attended.
Museveni thanked voters nationwide, with special mention of Kigezi. He said their support for the National Resistance Movement showed confidence in stability and continuity.
Military Leadership Details Intelligence Operations
Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Keinerugaba said security agencies received credible intelligence before the elections. He explained that some political actors intended to trigger violence.
According to the general, security teams moved quickly to contain those threats. He described the 2026 elections as the most peaceful Uganda has held in recent history. He credited preparation, coordination, and discipline within the forces.
Shift Toward Infrastructure and Economic Growth
With elections concluded, Museveni said the government will now focus on development. He outlined several infrastructure projects designed to boost tourism and trade.
The president announced plans to tarmac key tourism roads in the Kigezi sub-region. He also confirmed the expansion of Kisoro Airfield to handle increased traffic.
Museveni revealed that the government plans to build a standard airport in Kabale District. He said businessman Amos Nyezi has already offered land for the project.
International Airport Planned for Mbarara
Museveni also disclosed plans for an international airport in Mbarara. He said the facility would strengthen trade links and logistics.
According to the president, the airport would position western Uganda as a strategic midpoint. He highlighted trade links between East Asia, including China, and South American economies such as Brazil and Argentina.
Call for Commercial Agriculture in Kigezi
The president urged residents of Kigezi to invest in commercial agriculture. He encouraged the use of fertilisers and irrigation.
Museveni pointed to dairy farming, fish farming, and tourism as strong income sources. He said these sectors can raise household earnings and drive regional growth.
UPDF Officer Recognised for Outstanding Service
The celebrations also featured awards for excellence within the UPDF. Lieutenant Moses Odongo received Sh10 million after winning the Most Outstanding Junior Officer award for 2025.
Odongo serves with the 203 Ground-Based Air Defence Regiment. A panel of serving and retired senior officers assessed four shortlisted candidates. Odongo scored 86.71 per cent to take the top position.
Major General James Kilwana, Joint Staff for Human Resource Management, said the awards aim to reward discipline and performance. He added that the initiative motivates other officers to excel.
Profile of the Award Recipient
Lieutenant Odongo was born in Katakwi District in 1987. He joined the UPDF in October 2013.
His recognition drew applause from fellow officers as he received a certificate and cash prize. The moment marked a major milestone in his military career.
Tribute to Fallen Freedom Fighters
During the ceremony, Museveni honoured freedom fighters who lost their lives during Uganda’s struggle. He mentioned figures such as James Karambuzi, David Kagoro Kangyire, and Joseph Bitwari, who died during the Idi Amin era.
He also recalled other fighters executed in different parts of the country. Museveni said their sacrifices remain central to Uganda’s history and the meaning of Tarehe Sita.
