A meeting convened by the National Unity Platform (NUP) saw 35 legislators, including party president Robert Kyagulanyi, vote in favor of recalling Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga from his position as Parliamentary Commissioner due to allegations of abuse of office.
During the closed-door session, which lasted over three hours, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya revealed that Mr. Kyagulanyi emphasized the party’s stance against corruption, leading to unanimous support from attending legislators for disciplinary action against Mr. Mpuuga.
The meeting, held under strict confidentiality, required participants to leave their phones outside to prevent leaks. Sources disclosed that apologies were registered from several members, including Mr. Mpuuga, Medard Sseggona, Muwanga Kivumbi, and Geoffrey Lutaaya, for their absence.
Mr. Rubongoya announced that action would be taken against legislators who failed to attend without offering apologies in advance. Notably, absentees included Twaha Kagabo, Jimmy Lwanga, Michael Kakembo, and Abed Bwanika, some of whom have aligned themselves with other political groups.
While most legislators supported the party’s decision, a few voiced dissent, suggesting a more diplomatic approach to handling the allegations against Mr. Mpuuga.
Despite the party’s resolution, Mr. Mpuuga has not responded officially, maintaining that he deserved recognition for his tenure as Leader of Opposition. It’s important to note that the party’s decision alone cannot impeach Mr. Mpuuga; he must either resign voluntarily or face parliamentary procedures for removal, which require a majority vote by MPs.
