Over 90 Nakaseke schools get Covid boost ahead of reopening

Date:

As government clears schools for candidate classes to resume studies under the Covid-19 pandemic guidelines, 95 schools in Nakaseke District have received some of the Standard Operating Procedures logistical support ahead of reopening this Thursday.

Nakaseke District Education Officer, Mr Steven Batanude in an interview with the Daily Monitor on Monday revealed that the district that expects about 6,000 candidates to report for classes on October 15 as announced by the government invited several of the stakeholders in Nakaseke to extend a helping hand in form of logistical support for the SOPs, a call that has started yielding fruits.

“While it is assumed that the respective schools have to meet all the SOPs in line with the Covid-19 guidelines, the practicability may not be very easy due to financial limitations. We have received logistical support in form of hand washing facilities, liquid soap, exercise books and maize flour among others for 95 schools from the Rose Namayanja Foundation. We expect more support from many other friends of Nakaseke District in line with the recent appeal that we made to the general public,” Batanudde told the Daily Monitor in a brief interview on Monday.

“We have continued with the inspection exercise for schools to ensure that all schools that open for candidate classes meet the SOPs for the safety, of not only the learners, but the teachers and support staff. We have a challenge that some of our schools are struggling to have some of the logistics especially the private schools. We have allowed schools that meet 65 percent of the inspection tools to have operational licenses as we wait for many to put in place the required SOPs,” Batanude added.

Mr Charles Nsereko, a director at the Rose Namayanja Foundation said for the last six years, they have partnered with Nakaseke District authorities in promoting education programmes including the girl child education in which the foundation has injected about Shs100m to facilitate some of the schools with the SOPs.

“We may not fully meet all the requirements but appeal to all other well wishers to respond to the district appeal for more support,” Mr Nsereko said in a brief interview.
Nakaseke District has an estimated 230 schools but about 150 schools have met some of the SOPs and are ready to reopen for classes on October 15 although the District education office says that more schools will be cleared with time.  Advertisement

The District has boosted the inspection team through enlisting support from some of the retired teachers, the District Education Officer said.
