Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Launched, Replacing MK Movement

Date:

A group of individuals supporting First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has launched the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), replacing the MK Movement. The PLU, registered as a civil organization, aims to promote Gen Muhoozi’s causes and has generated discussions about the political transition in Uganda.

The chief guest, Capt Mike Mukula, suggested using the ruling National Resistance Movement Organization Party (NRM) as a vehicle for Gen Muhoozi’s political agenda. However, some Members of Parliament expressed hesitation about associating with the NRM, advocating for a different approach.

Despite Gen Muhoozi being named chairman of PLU, he did not attend the launch due to his status as a serving military officer, which prohibits involvement in partisan politics. The PLU currently comprises eight registered promoters, including political figures like MP David Kabanda, MP Michael Mawanda, and others.

Capt Mukula emphasized managing a smooth transition within the ruling party, citing examples from other countries. However, concerns have been raised about the abrupt fee increase for gorilla and chimpanzee tracking by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, affecting the tourism industry.

The PLU launch drew attendance from ministers, MPs, and local council chairpersons, with pledges of allegiance to the new organization. The transition from the MK Movement, which started in April 2022, has sparked discussions about Gen Muhoozi’s political future and potential registration of PLU as a political party.

MP Michael Mawanda clarified that PLU is a non-partisan, non-denominational, and non-sectarian organization focused on fostering good citizenship, national pride, service, combating corruption, and protecting vulnerable persons and the environment. The political dynamics surrounding Gen Muhoozi’s future and PLU’s role in Uganda’s political landscape continue to evolve.
