President Museveni of Uganda has welcomed the initiative to clean up the ruling party’s membership database, which revealed discrepancies in the voter register. This action was disclosed during the partial unveiling of the party’s roadmap at its secretariat in Kampala in preparation for the 2026 General Election.
According to NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, an internal audit revealed that the party’s membership was previously overstated at 17 million but has now been corrected to approximately 11.4 million members. Kenneth Kelvin Otto, one of the auditors, explained to the President that the discrepancies were mainly due to duplications and incomplete member details.
Of the 11.4 million authenticated members, it was reported that 5.8 million were women and 5.3 million were men. The audit ensured that each member had complete information, including full names, identification card numbers, date of birth, and phone numbers.
Looking ahead to the 2026 General Election, the NRM announced plans to display its voters’ register across 72,000 villages nationwide from March 13 to 17. This will be followed by nomination of candidates for party structure polls at the village level, campaigns, and elections at the village level on March 27.
President Museveni expressed curiosity about the inclusion of new members, humorously referencing opposition leader Bobi Wine. However, he emphasized the importance of welcoming individuals who have demonstrated a positive attitude towards the party over time.
The party’s roadmap outlines various activities leading up to the election, including compiling voters registers and polling at different administrative levels throughout April and early May.
This initiative reflects the NRM’s commitment to transparent and inclusive electoral processes, setting the stage for a significant political event in Uganda’s democratic landscape.
