Regional Leaders Congratulate Museveni on Election Victory

Date:

Regional leaders have sent messages congratulating President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election. This follows his official declaration as winner of Uganda’s 2026 presidential polls.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame was among the first to extend his congratulations. He sent best wishes to Museveni for his continued service to Uganda’s prosperity.

“I look forward to the continued strong and productive cooperation between our two countries,” Kagame stated.

Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, also hailed Museveni’s leadership. He noted Uganda’s progress in national development under Museveni. Furthermore, he acknowledged Uganda’s significant role in promoting regional peace and stability.

“I reaffirm Somalia’s commitment to strengthening our brotherly ties with Uganda,” President Mohamud said.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi sent a message as well. He said the re-election reflects the confidence of the Ugandan people. He attributed this to Museveni’s wise leadership.

“I wish His Excellency all success, and I wish the sisterly Republic of Uganda lasting progress and prosperity,” al-Sisi said.

He also reaffirmed Egypt’s keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation. This cooperation aims to serve mutual interests and promote continental stability and development.

The Electoral Commission declared Museveni the winner on Saturday. He secured approximately 71% of the vote. His closest rival, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform, came in second.

This victory marks the first time in three decades Museveni has won by over 70%. He last achieved a similar margin in 1996 with 74.3%.

In his acceptance speech, Museveni linked the 2026 result to the early days of the NRM government. He suggested it signals a return to the party’s original principles.

“We are beginning to go back to the principles of the NRM,” Museveni said on Sunday.
