South Sudan Assumes East African Community Chairmanship In A Momentous Occasion

Date:

The South Sudan ambassador to Uganda, Mr. Simon Juach Deng, expressed excitement and optimism about South Sudan’s recent ascension to the chairmanship of the East African Community (EAC). President Salva Kiir Mayardit took over the role last Friday, succeeding Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimye.

In a statement issued yesterday, Ambassador Deng hailed the transition as a watershed moment in President Mayardit is distinguished political career. He emphasized that the move signals a fresh chapter of cooperation, development, and progress within the regional bloc. The ambassador believes that with President Mayardit is wealth of experience, visionary leadership, and unwavering dedication, South Sudan is well-positioned to lead the EAC to even greater unity and prosperity.

“The ascension of President Kiir as chairperson underscores the bloc’s commitment to fostering unity and collaboration among member states. As an experienced statesman, President Kiir has demonstrated unwavering dedication to regional cooperation by nurturing peace and stability within South Sudan,” Ambassador Deng remarked.

Looking ahead, the envoy expressed hope that President Kiir will prioritize bolstering economic development in the region. Citing President Kiir’s expertise in East Africa regional affairs and his hands-on approach to governance, Ambassador Deng believes the South Sudanese leader is equipped to spearhead initiatives that drive economic progress within the EAC.

Founded in 2000, the East African Community currently boasts eight member states: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, the DR Congo, South Sudan, and the latest addition, Somalia, which joined last week. The diverse composition of member states reflects the EAC’s commitment to fostering collaboration and mutual growth in the region.

As South Sudan assumes the EAC chairmanship, the international community eagerly anticipates the positive impact President Kiir’s leadership will have on regional cooperation, economic development, and the overall prosperity of member states. The momentous occasion marks a new chapter in the EAC’s journey, with hopes for strengthened unity and collaborative efforts under South Sudan’s guidance.
