Juba, South Sudan – In a significant political move, President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed Ahok Ajiek Amet as the new Executive Secretary to the Office of the President, signaling a strategic reshuffle within the South Sudanese government. This appointment, announced on Thursday, is part of a broader wave of administrative changes aimed at consolidating Kiir’s influence as he prepares for the upcoming 2026 elections. The reshuffle reflects growing internal competition, political loyalty concerns, and economic instability within the nation.
In a formal ceremony in Juba, Kiir extended a warm handshake to Amet, formally welcoming her into the presidential inner circle. The president emphasized her vital role in supporting the operations of the executive, underlining her position as a key figure in the administration. The reshuffling of senior officials also saw Moses Rou Ayii appointed Private Secretary, replacing Deng Bona Bang Dhel, who was relieved of his duties on November 6.
A Leadership Shift Amidst Rising Tensions
The appointment of Ahok Amet follows a series of high-level decrees issued by Kiir, marking a period of rapid political shifts within the government. On November 3, Kiir dismissed several prominent figures, including Finance Minister Salvatore Garang Mabiordit and National Security Advisor Tut Gatluak Manime, though Gatluak was reappointed days later as the Presidential Advisor on National Security. The political shifts also extended to military and petroleum sectors, further solidifying Kiir’s grip on key government positions.
Tensions reached a peak on November 12 when Kiir demoted Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel, a former successor candidate. This move stripped Mel of his SPLM deputy chairmanship and demoted him from general to private in the National Security Service (NSS). The decree sparked widespread speculation about internal struggles within the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), fueling further debate on the future of the country’s leadership. Despite the dramatic dismissal, Bol Mel responded with grace, emphasizing his dedication to Kiir’s vision of a stable and self-reliant South Sudan.
Kiir Consolidates Loyalists Ahead of Elections
The recent reshuffling, including the appointment of Akol Paul Kordit as SPLM Secretary General, is widely seen as Kiir’s effort to consolidate loyalists and secure political backing ahead of 2026 elections. These moves come amid ongoing concerns over the economic situation, stalled implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, and delayed elections. Analysts view these changes as part of a broader strategy to combat corruption and enhance governance, with Kiir positioning himself for the upcoming political battles.
Ahok Ajiek Amet, who hails from Lakes State, brings significant administrative experience to her new role. A graduate of the University of Juba, she has worked on public sector reforms and capacity-building initiatives through the Local Capacity Development (LCAD) program. Amet is known for her advocacy for community empowerment and gender inclusion in governance, making her a notable figure in the country’s development efforts.
With these appointments, Kiir aims to strengthen his administration’s stability and governance framework, as South Sudan continues to navigate political uncertainty and economic challenges. The reshuffles signal that Kiir’s leadership is preparing for the long road ahead, with a focus on national unity and ensuring continuity in governance as the country moves closer to the 2026 elections.
