South Sudan’s Bol Mel Backs Nationwide Digital Transformation for Growth and Unity
South Sudan’s Vice President in charge of the Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, has pledged his full backing for accelerating the country’s digital transformation, highlighting its importance for development, commerce, youth empowerment, and national unity.
On Tuesday, Dr. Bol Mel met with Michael Makuei Lueth, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services, to map out a strategy focused on expanding ICT infrastructure, especially the national fiber optic network.
“We need to build a modern digital backbone that enables connectivity, boosts trade, and bridges communication gaps across the country,” Dr. Bol Mel emphasized during the meeting.
The discussions also spotlighted the creation of digital innovation hubs and digital skilling programs aimed at equipping South Sudan’s youth with the tools to participate in the global tech economy.
“In line with President Salva Kiir’s vision, we are prioritizing digital hubs and nationwide tech training to foster innovation and create jobs,” the VP’s office stated.
Beyond economic benefits, Dr. Bol Mel stressed the role of technology in peacebuilding and reconciliation, calling it a bridge for dialogue and national cohesion.
“In a diverse country like South Sudan, technology can unify us—encouraging dialogue and shaping a shared national identity,” he added.
This commitment comes at a time when South Sudan, despite enduring years of conflict, is experiencing a significant economic rebound. The World Bank and IMF project a 17% GDP growth rate for 2025, positioning the country among the fastest-growing economies globally.
Dr. Bol Mel’s leadership in this area is seen as laying the groundwork for a digitally connected, economically resilient, and socially cohesive South Sudan.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KmDV_47VoM
