Sugarcane Shortage in Busoga Sub-region Drives Retail Sugar Prices Up

Date:

A severe shortage of raw sugarcane in the Busoga Sub-region has prompted millers to resort to purchasing immature sugarcane, leading to a surge in sugar prices across the region. The scarcity of essential raw materials has caused a ripple effect on the entire sugar supply chain, forcing retailers to raise prices and leaving consumers feeling the pinch in their pockets.

Before the sugarcane shortage, retail prices of sugar in the Busoga Sub-region ranged from Shs4,500 to Shs5,000 per kg. However, in recent weeks, the retail price of sugar has skyrocketed, now ranging between Shs5,500 and Shs6,000 per kg. This drastic price increase has left consumers grappling with the unexpected financial burden of purchasing a household staple.

The scarcity of raw sugarcane has presented a challenging situation for local millers, who are now competing to acquire immature sugarcane to keep their operations running. With immature sugarcane, the quality of sugar production is compromised, leading to concerns about the overall quality and taste of the final product.

As a result of this crisis, a 50kg bag of sugar that previously sold for Shs231,000 at factory prices is now priced between Shs231,000 and Shs243,000. This has created a substantial gap between the factory prices and the retail prices, signaling significant profit margins for retailers and exacerbating the financial burden on consumers.

A local farmer from the region expressed concerns about the situation, stating that the shortage of raw sugarcane is affecting their livelihoods and economic well-being. “With the scarcity of raw sugarcane, our yields are decreasing, and we are left with no option but to sell immature crops to the millers. This compromises the sustainability of our farming practices and hampers our income,” said the concerned farmer.

Local authorities are working to address the issue and find potential solutions to mitigate the impact of the sugarcane shortage. Agricultural experts are urging farmers to adopt more sustainable farming practices to boost sugarcane yields and avoid such crises in the future.

The rise in sugar prices has also raised concerns about potential inflationary pressures on other essential commodities in the region. The increased cost of sugar is likely to have a domino effect on the cost of other goods and services, further straining the budgets of consumers already grappling with the economic downturn.

As the Busoga Sub-region faces this raw sugarcane shortage, all stakeholders are urged to collaborate in finding sustainable solutions. Government intervention, support for farmers, and exploration of alternative raw materials for sugar production are being considered to stabilize prices and ensure an adequate supply of sugar for consumers.

In the meantime, consumers in Busoga Sub-region are bracing themselves for the continuing surge in sugar prices, hoping for a swift resolution to the crisis that is impacting their daily lives.
