In a shocking turn of events, the police have apprehended two senior one students who authored an anonymous letter threatening to carry out a terror attack on their own school in the Sheema district, as well as two other schools in the Kasese district. The students, identified as Innocent Mwesigye, aged 16, and Amon Ayebare, aged 17, both attend St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Sheema.
According to Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, the letter, signed off as ADF rebels, was intended to terrorize the school administrators. After a meticulous investigation and cooperation with the school management, the authorities successfully tracked down and arrested the two students, who ultimately confessed to their involvement in the incident.
During police interrogation, Mwesigye and Ayebare admitted to writing the anonymous letter. Their motive was revealed to be an act of revenge against the school administration, as they had been disciplined following a report made by one of the dormitory captains regarding their misconduct.
Enanga revealed that the handwritten threat letter, which contained specific plans for the attacks, was discovered in an exercise book owned by the students. To ascertain the authenticity of the letter, the police will subject it to analysis by a handwriting expert.
Investigations by the police have uncovered that prior to the threatening letter, several students at St. Charles Lwanga had been expelled due to involvement in drug abuse. The two arrested students had also faced disciplinary action for their previous threat to set fire to the school dormitory.
The police spokesperson issued a stern warning to students, emphasizing that making violent threats or engaging in terrorism-related activities is a grave offense that will be treated as a criminal matter. Mwesigye and Ayebare are expected to be arraigned in court and subsequently remanded to a juvenile detention center.
This incident comes in the wake of a recent attack on Rubiriha Secondary School in Kampala, where the ADF rebel group targeted innocent students. During the assault, the rebels set fire to the boys’ dormitory and mercilessly shot and killed girls in their sleeping quarters. Additionally, they looted food supplies from the school store and abducted a few students, forcing them to transport the stolen goods to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The authorities are continuing their efforts to maintain the safety and security of educational institutions across the country. Schools are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities or threats to the relevant authorities.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of maintaining discipline and addressing grievances through appropriate channels, rather than resorting to criminal acts that endanger the lives and well-being of innocent individuals within the school community.
