Uganda Airlines revenue has surged from Shs28 billion in FY2019/20 to Shs319 billion in FY2023/24, marking a powerful recovery since the airline’s 2019 revival. Finance Minister Matia Kasaija announced the figures during the 2025/26 National Budget presentation at Kololo Independence Grounds.
The national carrier has grown into a key player in Uganda’s transport network. Its recovery reflects clear strategic planning and strong government backing.
Strategic Growth and Lower Airfares
Since its return, Uganda Airlines has expanded routes to Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the United Kingdom. This improved connectivity has made travel more affordable.
Kasaija explained that competition from Uganda Airlines has pushed other carriers to reduce their ticket prices. For example, a return flight to Nairobi now costs about USD 300. In 2019, the same trip was nearly USD 800.
The airline now offers 17 direct international routes, cutting travel time and boosting convenience for passengers. These routes benefit both Ugandan citizens and international travelers.
Growing Market Share and National Benefits
Uganda Airlines has grown its market share significantly. In 2019, it controlled just 4% of air traffic at Entebbe International Airport. Today, it handles 24% of all air traffic, making it the top operator at the hub.
This rise supports Uganda’s broader economic goals. The airline plays a direct role in promoting trade, tourism, and business travel.
Kasaija noted that with new aircraft and more funding, Uganda Airlines will operate more efficiently and serve more destinations. This means lower travel costs and easier access to global markets.
More Government Support for Expansion
The 2025/26 national budget includes new funds for Uganda Airlines. These will help the airline purchase more aircraft and expand both passenger and cargo services.
The airline is part of a wider Shs6.92 trillion plan for transport and infrastructure. This investment also includes roads, railways, and bridges. Together, these upgrades will improve Uganda’s regional and global competitiveness.
Uganda Airlines has become a symbol of national growth. It fits well within the government’s budget theme:
“Full Monetisation of the Ugandan Economy through Commercial Agriculture, Industrialisation, Expanding and Broadening Services, Digital Transformation and Market Access.”
With continued support, the airline will keep expanding its reach and delivering affordable, direct flights. Its growth reflects the nation’s push for modern, inclusive development.
Recent trends, such as the increase in Uganda tourism investment in 2025, also show the country’s improving travel infrastructure. Meanwhile, the government faces new challenges as taxi operators threaten a nationwide strike over traffic fines, highlighting the importance of balanced transport policies.
