Uganda – Leadership of UN Women Executive Board for 2026. Uganda has taken over the presidency of the UN Women Executive Board for 2026. This role recognizes the country’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment on the global stage.
The handover from Sweden occurred at a formal ceremony. Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delegated Minister Counsellor Celia Nabeta to represent him. Nabeta will now lead the board’s activities this year.

The board subsequently held a bureau meeting to outline key priorities. Members reaffirmed their dedication to strong governance and supporting UN Women’s core mandate.

UN Women was established in 2011 to consolidate the UN’s work on gender equality. Its Executive Board provides intergovernmental oversight and strategic guidance. Uganda’s presidency follows Sweden’s 2025 tenure, which focused on women’s economic empowerment and a new strategic plan.
