Uganda Passport Hits Highest Global Rank in Ten Years

Date:

Uganda’s passport has achieved its strongest global position in a decade. The latest Henley Passport Index ranks it 71st worldwide. This marks the best performance for the Ugandan passport since 2016.

The index is a leading authority on passport strength. It ranks countries by the number of destinations citizens can access without a prior visa. The data comes from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Currently, Ugandan passport holders can travel to 66 destinations visa-free or with a visa on arrival. This reflects a steady improvement in global mobility for Ugandans.

The ranking shows consistent progress over the past ten years. Uganda was ranked 72nd in 2025 and 73rd in 2024. It was 78th in 2023 and 81st in 2021. This positive long-term trend highlights gradual gains.

Globally, Singapore retained the top spot as the world’s most powerful passport. Japan and South Korea jointly ranked second. Several European nations shared third and fourth places. The United States ranked 10th.

Within East Africa, Kenya performed the strongest. It ranked 68th globally with access to 69 destinations. Tanzania followed closely in 69th place. Rwanda ranked 70th with access to 67 destinations. Burundi was the region’s lowest at 86th.

Analysts link Uganda’s improved position to several factors. Gradual gains in diplomatic engagement are key. Increased regional integration and better international travel arrangements over the past decade also contributed.

The ranking signals expanding travel opportunities for Ugandan citizens. This is particularly true within Africa and parts of Asia.

While Uganda still trails some regional peers, the index suggests continued upward momentum. This reinforces optimism about future improvements in global mobility for Ugandans.
