According to Ukraine’s armed forces, a significant Russian amphibious ship, the Caesar Kunikov, has been sunk off the coast of Russian-occupied Crimea. Reports indicate that powerful explosions were heard early on Wednesday, suggesting that the landing ship was hit south of Yalta. Ukraine’s intelligence directorate released video footage purportedly showing Magura V5 sea drones striking the ship.
This incident adds to a series of clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces in the region. Satellite images from last year revealed the relocation of much of Russia’s Black Sea fleet from Crimea to Novorossiysk. Ukrainian forces have claimed victories against the Black Sea fleet, disrupting Russian military operations and reportedly opening a corridor for Ukrainian grain exports.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine enters its third year, tensions remain high. Ukrainian armed forces chief Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi acknowledged the complexity of the situation, particularly around the flashpoint town of Avdiivka. Reinforcements are being deployed to bolster defenses against advancing Russian troops.
Tragically, the conflict continues to take a toll on civilians. A recent Russian missile attack on the mining town of Selydove resulted in the loss of three lives, including a child, and caused significant damage to local infrastructure.
While Russia’s navy has not officially confirmed the sinking of the Caesar Kunikov, Ukraine’s main intelligence directorate claims responsibility for the attack. The Magura V5 drones allegedly used in the strike are manufactured in Ukraine and are known for their speed and precision.
