The Uganda passport application process has been streamlined by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) to improve service efficiency for both residents and citizens abroad. Whether you’re applying for the first time or renewing your e-passport, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you through.

Overview of Uganda’s E-Passport System

In 2018, Uganda introduced the e-passport, replacing the traditional machine-readable passport. This new system enhances security features, improves international recognition, and allows for biometric data integration.

Types of Ugandan Passports

Ordinary Passport

  • Color: Sky Blue
  • Issued To: Ugandan citizens for general travel
  • Validity: 10 years

Official Passport

  • Color: Green
  • Issued To: Government officials traveling for official duties

Diplomatic Passport

  • Color: Red
  • Issued To: Diplomats, high-ranking officials, and their dependents

Requirements for a New Uganda Passport

Before initiating the Uganda passport application process, ensure you have the following:

  • National ID (NIRA-issued)
  • Birth certificate
  • Recommender’s national ID copy
  • Payment receipt from URA portal
  • Completed online application form
  • Three recent passport-size photos (white background)

Note: For minors, additional documents include parent/guardian consent and their national ID copies.

How to Apply for a Uganda Passport

Step 1: Online Application

Visit https://passport.go.ug and fill in the application form. Choose your passport type and submission location (e.g., Kampala, Pretoria, Washington DC, etc.).

Step 2: Payment

Pay the passport fees via URA using mobile money, Visa, or bank payment. Standard charges are:

  • Ordinary passport: UGX 250,000
  • Express service: UGX 400,000
  • Diplomatic/Official passport: UGX 400,000

Step 3: Book Appointment

After payment, schedule your appointment online at the enrollment center of your choice.

Step 4: Biometric Enrollment

Visit the DCIC enrollment center on your appointment date with all required documents. Your biometric data (fingerprints, facial image, signature) will be captured.

Step 5: Passport Collection

Your passport will be ready in 7–14 working days (ordinary) or 2–3 days (express). Collection is done at the Kyambogo center or designated foreign mission.

Applying from Abroad

Ugandans living abroad can apply at any of the diaspora passport centers:

  • Washington DC (USA)
  • Ottawa (Canada)
  • London (UK)
  • Abu Dhabi (UAE)
  • Pretoria (South Africa)
  • Copenhagen (Denmark)
  • Beijing (China)
  • Riyadh (Saudi Arabia – starting July 2025)

These centers offer biometric enrollment services, and passports are printed in Uganda before being sent back for collection.

Tracking Your Passport

Applicants can track the status of their application by visiting https://passport.go.ug and using their application reference number.

Common Issues and Tips

  • Double-check your documents before the appointment to avoid delays.
  • Ensure your national ID details match your passport application.
  • Book appointments early, especially during peak travel seasons.

The Uganda passport application process is now more accessible than ever, with digitized services and new passport offices abroad. Whether you’re applying locally or from the diaspora, following the proper steps ensures a smooth and efficient experience.
