URA honours tax payers

URA|TAXPAYERS|HONOURED

KAMPALA – The Uganda Revenue Authority celebrated and honoured top taxpayers in the country.

According to Ian Rumanyika, the URA’s public relations manager, the tax body celebrated top 10 most compliant taxpayers in the SME category per district, listed the top 25 per region and rewarded top 15 compliant in the country.

In a ceremony held at Mestil Hotel in Kampala on Friday (December 11, 2020), Rumanyika says this was a gratitude gesture from the taxman who promote voluntary tax compliance, Position URA as a listening partner, a business enabler and a service-oriented organisation.

“We are cognisant of the current times of COVID 19, and we are ready to walk the journey together with taxpayers for the good of our nation. We particularly dedicated this season to appreciate compliant taxpayers, especially those that remained compliant despite the hardships faced during Covid -19 pandemic, we celebrate their resilience,” he said.

The chairman board of directors of URA, Juma Kisaame, appreciated the efforts of the taxpayers in ensuring the country remained afloat despite the Covid-19 pandemic and the global business disruptions.

“It is no easy feat rising in the year that has posed a major threat to the global economy. The pandemic has disrupted trade networks, hit supply chains across the world, and resulted in a threatening drop in consumption.

We have seen many business people draw back from active business with the hope that tomorrow will get better. But these stars have made it through “nail-biting situations”, resiliently rising above the wave and shining bright. Because of you, URA has registered excellent performance results,” he said.

He reported that URA had collected gross revenue of UGX 4,170,505,209 Trillion of which 59% (UGX 2,456,458,939) was from domestic Taxes while 14% (1,714,046,269) was from taxes on international trade in the first quarter of 2020/2021.

He said URA was now focusing on bringing on board more taxpayers through Taxpayer Register Expansion programmes so that the tax burden is spread over a bigger number.

He said the board is also focusing on transforming the tax administration to ease doing business and reduce the cost of compliance.

“The fast pace of the digital revolution has made us invest in modern Information technology solutions to match with the changing trends in the business environment,” he added.

The Commissioner General of URA, John Musinguzi, said since this year’s Tax Appreciation season was launched on the 13th day of October 2020, the body has been privileged to physically visit and appreciate some of the taxpayers and key stakeholders.

“We have had very informative online business support discussions. Today, we gather to celebrate and appreciate “YOU” our distinguished taxpayers who voluntarily adhered to your tax obligations throughout the financial year 2019/2020,” he said.

He said URA has renewed the commitment to leading Uganda to economic self-sufficiency status and appealed to all taxpayers to commit to take this journey with the body.

“We aspire to mobilize enough revenue for national development. We are deliberately reviewing, reforming, and revamping the way we have been working,” he said, adding that several initiatives have been implemented to enable URA transform the way it works and offers a better service to its clients.
