Vivek Ramaswamy, the billionaire biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential contender, is reportedly preparing to announce his candidacy for Ohio governor in 2026, aiming to succeed Republican Mike DeWine, who is ineligible for a third term under state law. This news comes after Ramaswamy was passed over for the role of replacing Vice President-elect JD Vance in the Senate, a position he was considered for.
Ramaswamy, who is co-leading Donald Trump’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside Elon Musk, plans to continue his role within the Trump administration as he gears up for the governor’s race. While the gubernatorial seat will not be up for grabs until 2026, Ramaswamy intends to focus on DOGE first. According to anonymous sources cited by The New York Times, he will continue to work with Musk on large-scale reforms within the federal government before making a full transition to his campaign.
An Ohio native, Ramaswamy was among the candidates considered to replace Vance in the Senate but was passed over in favor of Lt. Gov. Jon Husted. Though Ramaswamy has never held public office, he is a prominent figure in the business and political realms.
Born in Cincinnati to Indian immigrant parents, Ramaswamy founded the biotechnology company Roivant Sciences in 2014 and guided it to a public offering in 2021. He still holds a 10% stake in the company and has diversified his wealth into a range of investments. His political journey began after stepping down as Roivant’s CEO in 2021, with the publication of his book Woke, Inc., which critiques corporate America’s focus on social justice. In 2022, he established Strive Asset Management, an anti-“woke” index fund firm. Ramaswamy then entered the presidential race for the Republican nomination in 2023, ultimately endorsing Donald Trump and supporting his campaign before being appointed to DOGE by Trump in November 2024.
Ramaswamy and Musk’s ambitious agenda within DOGE includes significant cuts to the federal budget, aiming to slash $2 trillion from government spending. Trump has described the initiative as a transformative effort, calling it “potentially ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time.”
As a billionaire involved in political affairs, Ramaswamy joins a growing list of wealthy individuals entering or influencing politics, following in the footsteps of Trump and others like Elon Musk, Stephen Feinberg, and Jared Isaacman, who have taken on key roles in the current administration.
