The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has given Sh127 million Uganda to 17 women’s groups in Kabale District Local Government. The groups were commissioned on Friday at the district council hall by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Kabale, Ronald Bakak.
Bakak advised the groups not to waste the funds on other things that are not in line with the program’s guidelines. He reminded them that the funds are not a gift from the government, but a loan that has to be paid back in three years.
Bakak also warned them of the legal implications of misusing the funds and encouraged them to follow the project guidelines that they submitted to the ministry.
The Kabale District Community Development officer, Christopher Namara, revealed that the District has been getting funds from UWEP since the 2016/2017 Financial Year, totaling 919 million shillings.
Namara was worried about the beneficiaries who fail to repay the funds regularly, accusing them of working with some district technical staff.
The funds came from the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme, a government program that aims to improve women’s access to financial services and train them on how to grow their enterprises, add value and market their products and services.
