Youth in Uganda today are aimed at Inclusive Commitment in Climate Plans

On 25th February 2021 at the Golden Tulip Hotel Kampala, the CCD in partnership with Climate Action Network Uganda (CAN-U) summoned a meeting for the youth to collect and gather their views on the National climate plans. Speaking at the event, Alex Crook the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) Climate Change Lead for East Africa emphasized that the voice and action of the youth is very vital in the climate change discussion in the build up to the COP26 meeting

African citizens’ response to climate change is hampered by a fundamental shortage of relevant, useful information for African audiences. The intensive media coverage and public awareness campaigns prevalent in much of the industrialized world have been largely absent in Africa, particularly outside major urban centers. Too often, youth voices have been absent from the international climate debates

Climate change is one of the most important issues on the global political and economic agenda, yet it has taken at least 20 years to become an international priority. In many ways, this is because climate change was originally communicated as a scientific problem. Complex, confusing, and at times contested scientific information resulted in a slow public and political response to the climate crisis.

The participants therefore call upon the government of Uganda with its partners develops a comprehensive engagement plan that highlights youth involvement in tackling the climate change crisis. They also made proposals and demand of the NDCs and LTS to look at the demographic dividends of Uganda to ensure that the youthful population is at the forefront of the benchmarks of the NDCs whilst putting in perspective the views and choices of the youth
