In a decisive move against armed terrorist groups, Burkina Faso’s military successfully neutralized more than 60 militants in the eastern region of the country, as reported by the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) news agency.
The clash unfolded in the Kulpelogo province, where units of the armed forces engaged with terrorists targeting the village of Kongore. Responding swiftly, the military launched an offensive operation resulting in the elimination of approximately 63 terrorists, including about 10 high-ranking field commanders who were sought by special services.
Following this successful operation, another militant group attempted to infiltrate the Kulpelogo province from neighboring Ghana. The Burkina Faso military promptly acted, successfully dismantling the incoming threat.
Burkina Faso has been grappling with terrorist activity since 2015, with various international extremist groups, including the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), posing a significant challenge. According to the non-governmental monitor ACLED, the toll of this violence has been severe, with at least 17,000 civilians and military personnel losing their lives in Burkina Faso since 2015. Furthermore, an alarming two million people have been displaced from their homes.
In a bid to enhance national security, Burkina Faso is actively working towards strengthening military cooperation with Russia. In late August, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister, Yunus-Bek Evkurov, engaged in discussions with Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore to explore avenues for fortifying defense and military collaboration between the two nations.
As Burkina Faso continues to grapple with the complex challenges posed by terrorism, this recent military success signals a proactive effort to address the persistent threat and safeguard the nation’s security. The collaboration with Russia adds a new dimension to Burkina Faso’s strategy, highlighting the global partnerships being forged to counteract the scourge of terrorism.
