Remarkable Miracle: 70-Year-Old Ugandan Woman Welcomes Twins through IVF

Date:

In an extraordinary and heartwarming turn of events, a 70-year-old Ugandan woman, Ms. Safiina Namukwaya, has given birth to twins through the groundbreaking procedure of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). This remarkable feat was accomplished under the expert care of Dr. Edward Sali at the Women’s Hospital International Fertility Centre.

Ms. Namukwaya, a resident of Masaka District, shared her incredible journey in an interview with the Monitor. Expressing her anticipation before going into the labor ward, she referred to the upcoming birth as a “miracle” and credited a friend for encouraging her that, after a prolonged wait, she would finally become a mother.

The mother of the newborn twins, a boy and a girl, acknowledged the unconventional nature of her pregnancy at her age, emphasizing that carrying twins was not something she had anticipated. Biologically, women typically undergo menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, marking the end of their reproductive years according to the World Health Organization.

Ms. Namukwaya revealed the challenges she faced during her pregnancy, including a period of illness that depleted her savings. Additionally, she shared the emotional toll of her partner’s abandonment, attributing it to societal expectations regarding multiple births.

Driven by societal pressures and past insults for being childless, Ms. Namukwaya decided to pursue pregnancy. Having suffered a miscarriage during her marriage, and with her husband passing away in 1992, she faced difficulties in conceiving even after entering into another relationship four years later.

Dr. Sali, the fertility specialist overseeing Ms. Namukwaya’s case, emphasized that age is merely a number in the face of advanced technology. He highlighted that Ms. Namukwaya, who had her first child at 67, is not an exception, citing over 60 patients over the age of 50 who have successfully delivered in the last 15 years.

As for concerns about breastfeeding and the health of both the mother and the newborns, Dr. Sali assured that with modern medical options, any woman can breastfeed, and the babies will receive the necessary care in the neonatal intensive care unit for a few days.

The story of Ms. Namukwaya’s remarkable journey serves as a testament to the strides made in fertility treatments and challenges societal norms surrounding age and childbirth. It also sheds light on the growing acceptance of assisted reproductive technologies like IVF in addressing infertility concerns.
