“Controversy Surrounds Alleged Bribery of Students for Pro-Government Protests”

Date:

In order to create an impression of domestic support for the Bill and alleviate international pressure, the NRM, fearing the mounting pressure from the international community, has allegedly resorted to hiring students through their Youth Wing mobilizer, Macxzon Muhwezi, to stage peaceful marches and demonstrations. Mr. Muhwezi is reported to have led the entire operation and signed for a payment of UGX 25 million to mobilize students from various universities in Kampala.

On Wednesday morning, more than 100 students from at least 13 universities and higher institutions of learning were successfully mobilized by Macxzon Muhwezi and peacefully marched to Parliament. Their purpose was to express gratitude to the government for approving the Anti-Homosexuality law. Some students have claimed that they received UGX 50,000 as a transport allowance.

The students gathered at Emerald Hotel on Bombo Road, where Macxzon briefed them about the marching plan and its execution. Additionally, the Wandegeya District Police Commander (DPC) reportedly received UGX 3 million to oversee the security of the protesters.

During their march, the students covered a distance of 3 kilometers from Wandegeya to Parliament. However, they were prevented from meeting the Speaker, Anita Among, as she was attending a regional speaker’s breakfast. Instead, they were received by Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, the proponent of the Bill, who accepted their note of gratitude and promised to deliver it to the Speaker.

Some students, like Nabuyanda Solomon, are astonished by the fact that the NRM government is spending significant sums of money on what they claim to be a legitimate cause. Solomon, a final year law student, questioned the practice of bribing individuals to protest and expressed support for the LGBTQ community, emphasizing that human rights should be non-negotiable and that love should not be considered a crime.
