The distribution of iron sheets in Karamoja, initially met with excitement, has become a source of frustration for residents who are unable to utilize the aid due to a lack of additional building materials such as nails, timber, and cement.
Residents, like Teresa Ngorok from Katanga village, express their predicament, stating that the received iron sheets are useless without the necessary materials for building. Anjello Pulkol, a councillor from Loputuk, criticizes the government for not consulting residents before initiating the program, exposing underlying socioeconomic challenges.
The lack of foresight has led to problems such as residents storing iron sheets in their bedrooms due to space constraints, and in Loputuk Sub County, aid is collectively stored in the trading centre to prevent theft from vulnerable dwellings.
Lokii Peter emphasizes the broader issue, stating that the government needs to understand the community’s inability to afford food, let alone additional building materials. The failure to consider these materials not only renders the initial aid ineffective but also highlights the deeper socioeconomic challenges faced by Karamoja residents. Local leaders express frustration, emphasizing the need for sustainable solutions to address the pressing needs of these vulnerable communities.
