Chancellors and Deputy Chancellors from the 39 Dioceses of the Church of Uganda have commenced a three-day retreat on Canon Law at the Lweza Training and Conference Center.
The Most Rev Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, praised the Chancellors for their dedicated legal service to the Church during the opening of the retreat. He emphasized the crucial role Chancellors play in ensuring the Church’s governance aligns with the laws of the Church of Uganda and Uganda itself.
Mr. Nabboth Muhairwe, the Provincial Chancellor, highlighted the retreat’s purpose in strengthening Church governance and providing a platform for Diocesan Chancellors to network and share experiences. The retreat aims to deepen understanding of Canon Law and other Church laws, facilitate networking among Chancellors, and orient new Chancellors to their roles and responsibilities.
Leading the retreat is Rev. Canon Dr. Phil Ashey, President of the American Anglican Council, an influential body within the Anglican Church in North America. Canon Ashey, a former prosecutor and legal practitioner, played a significant role in drafting the constitution and canons of the Anglican Church of North America and continues to lead the Governance Committee of the ACNA.
