Dr. Besigye Charged Over Protests Against Rising Prices

Date:

The State has charged Dr. Kizza Besigye and Samuel Lubega Mukaaku with unlawful demonstrations against the soaring commodity prices witnessed in 2023.

Dr. Besigye appeared before the Buganda Road Court to answer charges of inciting violence stemming from a 2022 protest in Kampala, where he and opposition activist Mukaaku rallied against the escalating cost of living.

The seasoned opposition leader has consistently voiced concerns about the economic challenges faced by Ugandans, urging the government to take decisive action to curb the rising prices of essential goods.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with political supporters closely following the court proceedings as Dr. Besigye continues to advocate for economic reforms.

On January 9, a scheduled court session was adjourned due to Dr. Besigye’s absence. He remains on remand at Luzira Prison, facing separate charges before the General Court Martial.

During the session, defence lawyer Erias Lukwago and the prosecution exchanged accusations regarding responsibility for Dr. Besigye’s nonappearance. Lukwago asserted that it was the prosecution’s duty to ensure his client was present in court.
