Dr. Yona Baguma Assumes Leadership as NARO Director General, Focused on Cassava Research and Food Security.

Dr. Yona Baguma has been appointed as the new Director General of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), replacing Dr. Ambrose Agona who is retiring on April 21, 2023.

The announcement was made by Mr. Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, who expressed his appreciation for Dr. Agona’s leadership in advancing agricultural research in Uganda. Dr. Baguma, who previously served as the Deputy Director General of NARO, is described as a Molecular Biologist with a focus on cassava research.

He has made significant contributions to food security and income generation through his work on cassava production, natural resource management, and disease management. Dr. Baguma has also been involved in research on drought-resilient cassava and has contributed to the development of biosafety regulatory guidelines in Uganda and beyond.

His appointment has been welcomed by the agricultural research community, and there are high hopes for his leadership at NARO.
