A major development occurred as al-Shabaab militants launched an assault on a military base in Bulo Marer, which is manned by African Union peacekeepers from Uganda. The attack involved a series of explosions, including vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices detonated by suicide bombers. While al-Shabaab’s media claimed that they had “overrun” the base, there has been no independent confirmation of this assertion.
According to officials in Somalia, the attack took place at dawn in the agricultural town of Bulo Marer, located approximately 110 kilometers south of Mogadishu. The militants successfully breached the base’s perimeters following the explosions, leading to intense fighting between the attackers and the peacekeeping forces. Witnesses also reported seeing militants within the town itself, which is situated just outside the base.
The status of a nearby base manned by Somali forces, which al-Shabaab claimed to have targeted as well, remains unclear. The group communicated through Telegram, claiming to have “overrun” the base. However, both the African Union military command and the Somali government have yet to comment on the attack. The African Union mission has confirmed the occurrence of the attack and stated that they are currently assessing the security situation.
Further updates and information regarding the attack on the Bulo Marer military base will be provided at a later time by the African Union forces.
