With just a couple of weeks left to Martyrs’ Day, workers at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine are working expeditiously to complete the works before time, the sound of drills is all you hear and men at work are all you see.
It would not be possible for these kinds of works to take place if it weren’t for the late Archbishop Dr. Livingstone Mpalanyi Ssentongo who kickstarted the re-development of the Namugongo Anglican Martyrs shrine.
Bishops from the Ankole who are the main celebrants toured the shrine to monitor the works. According to Bishop Jackson Matovu the Chairman of Uganda Martyr’s Museum Development Committee phase one of the project is now complete.
Phase 2 part of the works is now going on with the construction of the Amphitheatre.
According to the leaders of the Anglican church, the estimated budget of the project is 68 billion, Government has pledged to contribute almost a third of it. Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa from the Ankole diocese said his diocese is prepared to lead this year’s prayers and it will be a colorful event.
Over 400 Anglican pilgrims are expected to walk on foot from Ankole Region to the venue of the celebrations in Namugongo.
