“Tragic Taxi Accident in Bukedea District Leaves Three Dead, Others Injured”

Date:

Four individuals tragically lost their lives in a collision on Thursday along the Soroti-Mbale Road. The incident occurred at Corner Cell in Bukedea Town Council, just a short distance from the Bukedea Police Check-point.

Oscar Gregg Ageca, the Spokesman for the East Kyoga Regional Police, stated that the accident took place when the taxi with registration number UBH 695V, carrying the victims, veered off the road and flipped multiple times. Ageca attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding.

According to Ageca, eight survivors, who were in critical condition, were promptly taken to Bukedea Health Center IV for urgent medical attention.

Ageca further mentioned that the authorities are currently in the process of identifying the deceased, who include three men and one child.

In Bukedea district, back in March, another taxi accident occurred at Tamula along the Mbale-Soroti highway, claiming the lives of three individuals and causing injuries to several others when the vehicle overturned.

Uganda has been ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the countries with the highest rates of traffic-related fatalities, estimated at 29 car deaths per 100,000 people.

According to a recent police report released on Wednesday, Uganda experienced a significant increase of 16.9 percent in road accidents during the year 2022. The report states that there were 20,394 recorded cases of road accidents in 2022, compared to 17,443 cases the previous year.

Out of every 100 accidents, 22 resulted in fatalities, and the police attributed 61 percent of all accidents to reckless driving.

To address this alarming situation, the police have implemented various measures to tackle the issue of road accidents. These measures include the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations through targeted operations, with a specific focus on motorcycle taxis and other high-risk factors such as speeding and drunk driving.
