‘Dead’ Girl Shocks Mourners by Returning Home Alive

Date:

In an astonishing twist straight out of a horror movie, a girl presumed dead walked back home—alive—just as her family and neighbors were preparing to bury her.

The bizarre scene unfolded on Tuesday in Agorom West Village, Tororo, where mourners had gathered under funeral tents, food had been cooked, and the air was thick with grief. But everything came to a standstill when Rose Akware, the “deceased,” appeared at her doorstep—unharmed.

The Funeral That Never Was

Paul Otenge, Rose’s father, recounted the jaw-dropping moment with disbelief.

“Our daughter had gone missing. Then police recovered a female body. When we saw it, the face looked just like hers. We were devastated,” he said.

The family, already emotionally drained, reached an agreement with police to keep the body as they prepared for burial. Tents were raised, chairs hired, and over UGX 600,000 worth of food prepared for mourners.

But as the burial hour approached, Rose walked into the compound—sending mourners into screams, cries, and even collapse.

“It was like seeing a ghost,” one neighbor said. “People screamed. Some fled. Others wept again, this time from confusion.”

Rush to the Police Station

The family immediately rushed back to Tororo Central Police Station—this time not to claim a body, but to return it. They brought Rose along to prove she was alive and begged police to reclassify the corpse as unidentified.

The shocking case has since triggered waves of questions throughout Morukatipe Sub-county. How could a family misidentify their own daughter, especially when the deceased was reportedly still in a recognizable condition?

Who Was the Real Victim?

The real tragedy remains unsolved. The actual body, found near Nyamatunga Bridge in Kodike Parish, Kaliat Sub-county, was discovered by local sand miner Paul Ekisa.

“I was collecting sand near the bridge when I saw the body. I called the village chairperson,” he said.

James Elamo, chairperson of Nyamatunga Village, confirmed he immediately contacted police.

Now, Tororo Police are urging the public to come forward. Anyone with a missing female relative is encouraged to visit the station to help identify the body.

Shockwaves Across the Community

The story has ignited widespread disbelief and fear.

“How does a family go that far into mourning without being completely sure?” asked a resident. “This is the kind of thing you see in films, not in real life.”

The emotional rollercoaster has gripped the community. Rose’s return has brought joy to her family—but also fresh sorrow for the unidentified girl, whose family may still be searching for her.

A Village Haunted by the Mix-up

Funeral food spoiled. Mourners left stunned. The village is still recovering from the emotional whiplash.

“There were moments when people didn’t know whether to celebrate or cry,” a local elder said. “It’s a blessing that Rose is alive. But there’s another family out there, grieving—and they don’t even know it yet.”

As police continue their search for answers, the mystery girl’s body remains in custody, awaiting someone who recognizes her—someone still unaware that their own tragedy hasn’t even begun.
