Hamz Stadium Opens: A New Landmark for Sports and Culture in Kampala

Date:

Kampala experienced a significant transformation on June 1, 2024, with the grand opening of Hamz Stadium, formerly Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium. The event marked a new era for Uganda’s sports and entertainment sectors, driven by Hamis Kiggundu and executed by Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, in collaboration with the Ugandan Government.

The renovation project, which began in 2017 under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), transformed the historic stadium into a modern facility. This was officially recognized on April 25, 2024, when President Museveni praised Kiggundu’s vision and announced a 49-year lease for him to manage and recover his investment.

The grand opening featured a 10-minute fireworks display and drew a near-capacity crowd of 35,000, with all 40 executive boxes and lounges sold out. Activities included a football match where URA FC defeated Kitara FC 3-0, another fireworks display, and performances by artists like Rema, Eddy Kenzo, Cindy, Bebe Cool, and Alien Skin.

Other sports events included SC Villa’s victory over Express FC, amateur boxing with Zahara Nandawula defeating Flavia Babirye, and professional boxing featuring Isaac Zebra Jr and Abas Seguya. Basketball and netball matches also added excitement.

The event was attended by VVIPs, celebrities, and tycoons, including former Vice Presidents Gilbert Bukenya and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, FUFA President Moses Magogo, Vision Group CEO Don Wanyama, ONC boss Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, His Excellency Godfrey Kirumira Kalule, and Ahmed Omar Mandela. Guests enjoyed complimentary meals while participating in the festivities.

Security was tight, with rigorous checks and security agencies like the UPDF ensuring order. Emergency medical services were also available, providing prompt first aid when needed.

Hamis Kiggundu expressed gratitude for the successful event, stating, “Thanks to everyone, it was such a successful and wonderful grand opening. The stadium is now ready to host sports and other activities. For God and My Country.”

The grand opening of Hamz Stadium celebrated Ugandan culture, talent, and unity, blending sports, music, and fireworks to create a memorable experience.
