Kampala’s New Icon: Unveiling Hamz Stadium

Video Overview of the Event

On June 1, 2024, the heart of Kampala pulsed with excitement as Hamz Stadium, formerly Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, celebrated its grand opening. This iconic event, driven by the vision of young mogul Hamis Kiggundu and supported by the Ugandan Government, heralded a new era for sports and entertainment in Uganda.

Realizing a Vision

Hamis Kiggundu’s ambitious project began in 2017, aiming to transform Nakivubo Stadium into a state-of-the-art facility. This public-private partnership was celebrated on April 25, 2024, when President Museveni praised Kiggundu’s dedication and announced a 49-year lease for him to manage and recoup his investment.

A Night of Splendor

The grand opening on June 1, 2024, was a night to remember. The festivities kicked off with a dazzling 10-minute fireworks display, setting the stage for a night filled with excitement. The stadium, nearly filled to its 35,000 capacity, saw all 40 executive boxes sold out, highlighting the public’s enthusiasm.

Extravaganza of Sports and Entertainment

The evening featured a mix of sports and entertainment. URA FC’s 3-0 win over Kitara FC started the night, followed by another stunning fireworks display. Top Ugandan artists like Rema, Eddy Kenzo, and Bebe Cool energized the crowd with electrifying performances. SC Villa’s 1-0 victory over Express FC and thrilling boxing matches added to the excitement, culminating in a draw between Golola Moses and Umar Sematta.

Notable Attendees

The grand opening attracted an impressive lineup of VVIPs and celebrities, including former Vice Presidents Gilbert Bukenya and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, FUFA President Moses Magogo, and tycoon Ahmed Omar Mandela. Enhanced security measures ensured a safe and orderly event, with restricted city access and thorough checks.

Exceptional Medical and Culinary Services

Emergency medical services were on standby, ensuring attendees’ safety. The prompt response to Muhindo Geofrey’s medical emergency exemplified the high level of care. Complimentary meals and drinks, provided by Ham, added a hospitable touch to the grand occasion.

Ham’s Heartfelt Thanks

Reflecting on the event’s success, Hamis Kiggundu expressed his gratitude. “Thanks to everyone, it was such a successful and wonderful grand opening,” he said. “The stadium is now ready to host sports and other activities. For God and My Country,” he added, marking the start of a new era for Hamz Stadium.

A New Era for Uganda

The grand opening of Hamz Stadium was more than an event; it was a celebration of Uganda’s culture, talent, and unity. The blend of sports, music, and fireworks created an unforgettable night, heralding a bright future for this iconic venue.
