I won! Snyder Cut never existed

Date:

This became the primary source of contention in online forums: not if the Snyder Cut was worth watching but whether it existed in the first place. Warner Bros supposedly ended the argument a while back when it revealed that the Snyder Cut would finally come to HBO Max in 2021.

This was perceived as an admission of its existence. Snyder’s fans lost their minds. Warner Bros had finally validated their delusions. Okay, ‘delusions’ sounds harsh. But you have to admit that their reactions were somewhat excessive, not to mention premature. First of all, this idea that they ‘won’ is a little foolish.

It suggests that Warner Bros caved to the pressure and the studio was only releasing the Snyder Cut because the people demanded it. That could not be further from the truth. We know why the studio is releasing the Snyder Cut. Like every streaming platform, they need engaging content to attract viewers to HBO Max, specifically popular franchises that have a strong chance of monopolizing the public’s attention.

Yes, the enthusiasm surrounding the Snyder Cut proved to Warner Bros that releasing it would profit them. But if the Covid-19 pandemic had not limited their ability to produce new content for HBO Max, the Snyder Cut would not have seen the light of day, regardless of the verbal fury DC fans kept unleashing against the studio. None of that even matters at the moment.

Why? Well, Warner Bros is going to spend $70 million to finish the Snyder Cut, exceeding the $30 million initial budget. In other words, DC is making an entirely new movie. Think about it. Joker had a budget of $55m. Zack Snyder is going to spend more money finishing his version of the Justice League than Todd Phillips spent on Joker, the studio’s biggest critical hit to date.

What does this tell you? The Snyder Cut does not exist. It never did. Bob Greenblatt (former Warner Media Chairman) admitted that Zack Snyder was in the process of building the movie.

This contradicts the claims rabid Snyder Cut proponents made years back when they assured us all that Snyder Cut was just sitting on a shelf in a Warner Bros vault, waiting to be released. Greenblatt said the exact opposite. To be clear, I agree with the studio’s decision to pursue this project. Zack started the DCEU.

He set the tone of the entire franchise with Man of Steel. Whether the Snyder Cut succeeds or fails, it is only right that Warner Bros allows the director to complete his story. I hope this ends that particular debate once and for all. Am I being petty? I suppose. I like the fact that Greenblatt’s comments vindicated my position on the issue. So, I guess I won.
